SUMMARY:

The social and environmental impacts resulting from the fossil fuels burning have encouraged several countries to implement more sustainable practices. Allied to this, the demand for electricity continues to grow worldwide. In this context, distributed generation systems (DGs) based on renewable energy sources (RES) have been increasingly integrated into the Electric Power System (EPS). As a result, the traditional EPS structure has been reorganized using the microgrid concept. In this network model, Energy Storage Systems (ESS), loads and DGs behave as a single controllable entity, being able to operate connected or isolated from the main grid. Thus, microgrid control systems must be able to handle power management, voltage and frequency stability, power quality and synchronization. To implement the active and reactive power flow regulation in the microgrids' DGs and ESSs, it is necessary to carry out the estimation of these powers and apply them in the respective control loops. The approach traditionally used in this estimation is based on the p-q theory concepts, which is widely accepted in the literature. However, this method presents inaccuracies in the presence of distortions and imbalances. Therefore, in this work is performed an analysis of power estimation methods applied to AC microgrids, operating under unbalance, distortions, frequency variations and continuous components conditions. In addition to p-q theory, frequency domain approaches based on discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and stationary discrete wavelet packet transform (SDWPT) are implemented and compared. From the analysis, it is intended to map the disadvantages of each method and in which scenarios they fail. Moreover, possible modifications are tested to reduce these problems. Preliminary experimental results present comparisons of the studied methods
