SUMMARY:

The increase in demand for the electricity worldwide and concerns about the environment have been an impetus for the use of more sources of electric energy generation called Renewable Energy Sources (RESs). In addition, there is also a search for the new alternatives for the supply of electricity in isolated/remote communities that can be connected or isolated from the main grid. When connected to the grid, long distribution lines (transformers far from consumers) and diesel generators are usually used, which generates low reliability in the grid, in addition producing greenhouse gases. These main grids have stability issues with voltage and frequency fluctuations in addition a frequent shutdown of energy. Due to such characteristics, these main grids are classified as Weak Grids. So, investigate a solution that can supply the requested demand of the community in the best possible way and with less environmental impact. There is the possibility of inserting the FREs in the Electric Power System in the format of Distributed Generation Systems (DGs) through microgrids. This last concept represent a group of DGs, Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) and loads, being possible to operate in both connected and islanded mode from the main grid. Through the use of microgrids, it is possible to circumvent the problems present in the main grid, properly managing the energy supply to community loads and also providing voltage and frequency support to the electrical grid, thus promoting the increase of its stability margins. In this sense, this work presents the implementation of a single-phase AC microgrid to guarantee reliability to a grid of a remote community. The microgrid is composed of two photovoltaic systems, a Small Hydroelectric Power Plant and loads from consumers. The implementation is based on the condition of the generation availability of the microgrid components, on the active and reactive power demand curves and on the irradiance curve of the PV systems. Simulation results are presented in order to demonstrate the operation of the microgrid, both in connected and islanded mode, in the supply of power to the loads. In addition, the performance of the microgrid under variations in generation and consumption of active and reactive power is verified.
