RESUMO:

Over the years the necessity for mobility and rapid service deployments has grown the use of wireless devices. In these devices the antenna is indispensable. It is responsible for sending and receiving signals. The ideal antenna is the one that can radiate all the power supplied, but at practice it is not possible. However, antenna designs must meet that requirement. Microstrip antennas have some advantages, among them: simple manufacturing, low cost, adaptive facilities on flat and non-flat surfaces, and easy integration with microelectronics projects. However, microstrip antennas have disadvantages, among them: low gain, low radiation efficiency, surface waves and narrow bandwidth. In the literature, it is possible to find some solutions to minimize these disadvantages. Insertion of defects in the ground plane, DGS (Defected Ground Structure), is capable of minimizing such disadvantages. The DGS changes the current distribution in the antenna based on the size, shape, or even position of the defect. In its first proposal, in altered (H) format, the electric behavior is analyzed by equivalent LC circuit. Therefore, it changes the capacitive and inductive response of the antenna. The DGS is applied to improve the parameters (figures of merit) of an antenna. Such as, increase radiation efficiency, increase bandwidth, suppress unwanted frequencies, reduce antenna dimensions and reduce mutual coupling. The use of DGS to improve figures of merit in microstrip antennas will be presented in this work.
