RESUMO:

This work aims to investigate the influence of the complementary split-ring resonators (CSRR) on the design of microstrip filters. The bandstop behavior in the vicinity of the resonance in metamaterial resonators can be used to design rejection bands in microstrip transmission lines structures. It is also possible to convert this bandstop response into a bandpass one, only by making some changes in the microstrip transmission line. In order to demonstrate these effects, some concepts are initially presented to characterize the metamaterials, as well as some formulas to calculate the resonant frequency for the most common split-ring resonators (SRR) and complementary split-ring resonators (CSRR), in the square and circular shapes. These formulas are used to design bandstop and bandpass microstrip filters from simple microstrip transmission lines. Additionally, it is presented a lowpass microstrip filter whose performance was improved by the use of CSRR on the ground plane. Better values of selectivity and insertion loss were obtained through the use of this technique. Therefore, the results obtained so far show that this procedure can be use to design filters with improved performances.
