SUMMARY:

Introduction: Sleep is an essential physiological need and is fundamental to physical, mental, and emotional balance. Given its relevance to overall health, sleep should be addressed in Primary Health Care (PHC), the main gateway to Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) and responsible for most of the population’s healthcare demands. By recognizing sleep as a determinant of health, PHC can act preventively and effectively by promoting healthy habits, enabling the early identification of sleep disorders, and providing continuous care. Objective: To analyze healthcare visits related to sleep disturbances and disorders provided in Primary Health Care in Brazil. Method: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, longitudinal, ecological, and retrospective study with a quantitative approach, based on data from healthcare production reports concerning sleep disturbances and disorders in PHC in Brazil, recorded in the Primary Health Care Health Information System (SISAB). National data from all Primary Health Care teams were analyzed for the period from 2015 to 2024, using filters for state, reference period (month/year), sex, age group, type of healthcare visit (individual), and ICPC/ICD codes: sleep disturbance (ICPC P06), non-organic sleep disorders due to emotional factors (ICD-10 F51), insomnia (ICD-10 G47.0), and sleep apnea (ICD-10 G47.3). Data were imported, organized, and described using Microsoft Excel®, with absolute frequencies. Additionally, rates per 100,000 inhabitants and rate ratios of healthcare visits (RTA) were calculated using Poisson regression. Rhythmicity analysis was performed by state, considering month and year, using cosinor analysis. Results: Between 2015 and 2024, 4,325,949 healthcare visits related to sleep disturbances and disorders were recorded in Primary Health Care in Brazil. Rates increased throughout the study period (p<0.001), particularly during and after the pandemic, with sleep apnea showing the greatest increase (RTA=4.68). Women presented approximately twice the rates for P06, G47.0, and F51, with a peak among those aged 45–59 years (RTA=2.36), whereas sleep apnea predominated among men. Regional disparities were observed, with higher rates in the Northeast for P06, in the Southeast for F51, and in the South for G47.0 and G47.3. Rhythmicity analysis revealed a consistent seasonal pattern in the diagnoses (P06, G47.0, G47.3), particularly in the South and Southeast regions, whereas in the Northeast, North, and Center-West, seasonality was observed for diagnosis F51, with higher incidence in winter and greater amplitude in the states of the South and Southeast regions (p<0.05). Final considerations: Therefore, this study provides systematic and robust data that outline the current situation in Brazil, generating evidence to support the development of more effective public policies aimed at promoting sleep health.
