FOOD INSECURITY AND MENTAL HEALTH IN A POPULATION FROM THE
INTERIOR OF NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL: A DESCRIPTIVE EXPLORATORY STUDY
food insecurity; mental health; quality of life; focus groups.
Introduction: Food and nutrition insecurity (FNI) is a phenomenon characterized by a family’s inability to have regular access to quality food, which may negatively affect other aspects of life if the purchase of food takes priority over other basic needs. This
condition can generate a mixture of sensations and emotions that may affect citizens’ mental health. Objective: To investigate the relationship between people experiencing food insecurity and psychological distress. Method: This is a descriptive, exploratory study with both qualitative and quantitative approaches. As a product of a previous research project that aimed to identify the food
and nutritional situation of the population of the city of Santa Cruz between 2022 and 2023, this study seeks to verify, within the scope of rural communities and one of the city’s neighborhoods, the citizens who can be classified as being in a situation of food
insecurity. With this in mind, the identification method chosen was the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA). From this stage, the identified participants will be contacted again and, through interviews and focus groups, the dynamics related to the context of
food and nutrition insecurity will be examined, including whether there are issues of distress or worsening mental health associated with this condition, as well as identifying how individuals cope with this situation. Expected Results: It is expected to find some relationship between cases identified as food and nutrition insecurity and issues related to mental health, in addition to understanding whether there are different coping strategies adopted by the urban and rural populations. It is also expected that this work may later foster discussions on the topic, which remains relatively underexplored. Conclusion: It is concluded that this study is relevant for understanding the impacts of hunger on the studied population, as well as highlighting the need for further studies to
achieve a deeper understanding of the topic.
