SUMMARY:

Introduction: Sleep is an essential physiological need and plays a fundamental role in physical, mental, and emotional balance. Given its relevance to comprehensive health, sleep should be prioritized within Primary Health Care (PHC), the main entry point to Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) and the level responsible for most population health demands. By recognizing sleep as a health determinant, PHC can act preventively and resolutely, promoting healthy habits, enabling early identification of sleep disorders, and ensuring continuous care. Objective: To analyze health care encounters related to sleep disturbances and disorders provided in Primary Health Care in Brazil. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study adopted a quantitative approach and was based on national health care production data recorded in the Primary Health Care Information System (SISAB). Data from all PHC teams in Brazil between 2015 and 2024 were analyzed, applying filters by state, reporting period (month/year), sex, age group, type of encounter (individual), and diagnostic codes: sleep disturbance (ICPC P06), non-organic sleep disorders due to emotional factors (ICD-10 F51), insomnia (ICD-10 G47.0), and sleep apnea (ICD-10 G47.3). Data were organized and described using Microsoft Excel®, with descriptive statistics expressed as absolute and relative frequencies. Time series modeling using the ARIMA method was performed in R, and seasonal rhythmicity by state was assessed using cosinor analysis. Results: Between 2015 and 2024, 4,325,949 PHC encounters related to sleep disturbances and disorders were recorded in Brazil, of which 67.4% involved females and 32.6% males. The most affected age groups were 45–59 years (29.1%) and 60–74 years (29.0%). Time series analysis showed an increasing trend for ICPC P06 and ICD-10 G47.0 and G47.3, with projected growth in encounters for 2025, whereas ICD-10 F51 remained stable. Rhythmicity analysis revealed a consistent seasonal pattern, with higher incidence during winter, greater amplitude in the South and Southeast regions, and statistically significant seasonality (p < 0.05) across most states and diagnostic categories. Conclusions: This study provides robust, systematized national data on sleep-related care in Brazilian PHC, outlining the current epidemiological scenario and generating evidence to support the development of more effective public health policies aimed at promoting sleep health.
