“I CAN’T BREASTFEED”: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY IN ONLINE FORUMS

SUMMARY:

Introduction: Due to the numerous benefits of breastfeeding, many mothers express the desire to breastfeed during pregnancy. With the birth of a baby, breastfeeding can become a more complex experience. Not being able to breastfeed can be frustrating and a significant source of psychological distress. In order to find support during this difficult time, online forums function as a form of social support, promoting the sharing of ideas and experiences. Objective: To explore how the experience of “not being able to breastfeed” is experienced in online forums. Methodology: This cross-sectional, qualitative study was developed with an exploratory and descriptive design. Data were collected from the term “I can’t breastfeed”, written since 2011, in online forums contained in the Brasil.BabyCenter.com platform, a public domain website used by pregnant and postpartum women. For data processing, Bardin's Content Analysis was used, with support from the software Interface de R pour les Analyses Multimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires (IRaMuTeQ). The texts extracted from the Online Forums were formatted, standardized, transformed into a single file called corpus, for analysis in the software and underwent thematic analysis. Results: 511 opening topics were analyzed, which the IRaMuTeQ software divided into 1,395 text segments, of which 98.92% were used and organized into 5 lexical classes. The speeches were categorized into classes related to the contents: About the reasons for not being able to breastfeed: the mother; Emotional microcosm of “not breastfeeding”; Support and obstacle strategies; About the reasons for not being able to breastfeed: the baby; Strategies for pain relief. Final considerations: The experiences shared in the forums, in the form of information or advice, can become an invaluable source of practical knowledge, since women report real events and difficulties, which can help to better understand this reality and, consequently, the care/monitoring process for this audience.
