Introduction: Aging causes biological, psychological and social changes in individuals. In Brazil, the elderly population grew from 6.1% in 1980 to 15.8% in 2022. This increase results in a greater prevalence of diseases and use of medications, especially psychotropic drugs, whose indiscriminate use can mask symptoms of other pathologies and make treatments difficult in health. Objective: To understand the use of psychotropic drugs by elderly people based on the Social Determinants of Health described by Dahlgren and Whitehead. Materials and methods: This descriptive, exploratory and qualitative research was carried out in the municipality of Santa Cruz, RN. It involved elderly people who use psychotropic drugs and are cared for in Basic Health Units (UBS). Data collection is ongoing between August and December 2024, with semi-structured interviews with open questions related to health determinants. The interviews are being audio recorded for transcription and analysis. The organization of the data was based on the categorization of information, relating it to the layers of the Dahlgren and Whitehead model. Expected results: It is expected to gain an understanding of the factors that influence the use of psychotropic drugs among the elderly. Final considerations of the work: The results can support the development of public policies aimed at equitably welcoming the elderly population, promoting adequate diagnoses and the conscious use of psychotropic drugs, contributing to the reduction of healthcare costs and the improvement of comprehensive care for the elderly.
