SUMMARY:

The present research project proposes an approach based on an Investigative Teaching Sequence (ITS), articulated with the Science, Technology, Society, and Environment (STSE) perspective, with the aim of addressing selected organic functional groups present in pesticides and establishing relationships between their chemical structures and environmental contamination processes, particularly those affecting soil and water. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, encompassing both qualitative and quantitative aspects, and is grounded in theoretical frameworks related to inquiry-based teaching, the STSE approach, and Chemistry education, as well as in official educational documents, such as the Brazilian National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) and the Ceará Reference Curriculum Document for Upper Secondary Education (DCRC). The proposal will be developed within an In-Depth Learning Pathway (Itinerário Formativo de Aprofundamento – IFA) course in the Natural Sciences area, with a group of second-year students at Arsênio Ferreira Maia Full-Time Secondary School (EEMTI), located in the municipality of Limoeiro do Norte, Ceará, Brazil. As an educational product, a teaching guide in e-book format, entitled Pesticides and Organic Functional Groups: An Inquiry-Based Approach to Chemistry Teaching, will be developed.The pedagogical intervention will include the problematization of situations related to the students’ local context, group-based investigative activities involving molecular structures, analysis of a problem situation related to water contamination, the development of a learning journal, and the production of a scientific podcast. The proposal is expected to contribute to students’ ability to establish relationships between the organic functional groups present in pesticides used in the Jaguaribe Valley region of Ceará and the processes of soil and water contamination, thereby promoting the understanding of chemical concepts through a relevant environmental problem.
