Emotions play a central role in cognitive processes and can influence academic performance. Using James Russell's circumplex model, this study investigated the relationship between self-reported emotional states and the academic performance of students in elective and transdisciplinary undergraduate courses at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), specifically in courses at the Brain Institute (ICe) and the Center for Biosciences (CB). Questionnaires were administered before and after classes to assess affective state, perceived usefulness of the class, engagement, motivation, and other academic data. The sample consisted of undergraduate students, followed over three consecutive semesters, with voluntary participation. Participants who did not complete at least half of the questionnaires were excluded. The results did not indicate a statistically significant correlation between self-reported emotional states and academic performance, contradicting the initial hypothesis of the study. This finding may reflect limitations of the subjective measurement of emotions. In parallel, the presence of the Dunning-Kruger effect was identified, characterized by a distortion, a bias, between self-assessment of competence and actual academic performance. This effect reinforces the importance of developing self-awareness and metacognitive skills in the educational context.
