SUMMARY:

Scientific and Technological Literacy (ACT) has emerged as one of the main educational objectives to be promoted in Science teaching. Although this perspective seeks to promote a greater encounter between students and scientific and technological culture, it is crucial to recognize that there is an incompleteness in the epistemic approach to Technology within ACT. From this perspective, this study sought to analyze the dimensions of ACT in an expanded way, seeking to recognize its gaps in the initial training of Natural Sciences teachers. The study is characterized as a qualitative research approach of an interventional nature, demarcated in the application modality. The research was divided into two stages. The first was dedicated to carrying out a broad state of the issue in national and international databases and journals between the years 1992-2022. For analytical support of the selected corpus, the IRaMuTeQ software was used. In the second stage, we sought to collect empirical data through a training course anchored in the three pedagogical moments, which took place at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). 12 teachers in initial training in Biological Sciences and
Chemistry participated in the course. The instruments used were diagnostic assessment, participant observation, logbook, voice recorder and questionnaire. The research was submitted to the UFRN Ethics and Research Committee, approved by opinion no. 6,414,777. To analyze the corpus collected in the training course, Discursive Textual Analysis (ATD) was used. Among the results, it is inferred that the search for technological aspects in ACT in national and international academic productions revealed evidence that could add to the defense of an incompleteness in ACT. In view of this, we propose three dimensions of Technological Literacy
based on different references, which we are calling: i) basic understanding of the language of technological codes and artifacts; ii) understanding the Nature of Technology, and iii) attitude towards socio-techno-scientific aspects and issues. From the data collected in the training course, the final category emerged through ATD: i) technological contrasts: the prevalence of the dissemination of “simplistic” conceptions of Technology. In general terms, the speeches of the different participants show a variety of understandings about Technology, but a purely instrumental conception still prevails. The diversity of concepts found highlights the complexity of Technology and the need for a comprehensive understanding of its nature in the researched universe.
