SUMMARY:

Introduction: The issue of long waiting times in health care is a priority agenda for both the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries and for countries with lower levels of development. Ensuring timely access to health permeates clinical aspects, psychological, social, ethical, economic and legal.
Objective: This research project will address a quality improvement cycle aimed at reducing waiting time in elective urological surgeries, presenting the main interventions and evaluating their impact.
Method: The quality improvement cycle will be carried out at Hospital Dr. Waldemar Alcântara and has a quasi-experimental design, without a parallel control group. After a qualitative analysis of the problem, there will be an intervention in work processes and in the organization of the service, and its effect on reducing waiting time will be analyzed. The indicator used will be the waiting time for elective urological surgery and will be measured in all surgeries from July 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021. Data will be collected from hospital records and there will be no identification of health professionals nor of patients.
Partial results: An average of 101 days of waiting for elective urological surgery was identified as the initial level of quality. The average time from patient preparation to appointment was 60 days and the average time in line waiting for the procedure was 40 days. The distribution of preparation time was more regular and had a statistically related correlation with the total time.
