SUMMARY:

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Brazilian education is facing difficulties, many of which are currently a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in 2019. Research conducted by the OECD found that Brazil was the country where schools remained closed for the longest time between 2020 and 2022, highlighting the urgent need for methodological changes in the teaching of the mother tongue. As a result, this research is presented, the objective of which is to discuss literary literacy workshops based on the retextualization and rewriting of tales belonging to the oral tradition. This practice is justified by enabling a significant reflection on the gap in textbooks regarding this discursive genre, which is so valuable to the learning process due to its attractive nature for elementary school students, as it is a popular and curious text that fosters the construction of the Brazilian symbolic and social imaginary. This research is conducted from this perspective, based on the real and fictional story of Amelia Duarte Machado, known as Viuva Machado or Papa Figo, who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and became a historical figure in Rio Grande do Norte, due to the mysteries and rumors surrounding her. Theoretically, it is supported by the dialogic conception of language, genres and literacy studies, specifically the concepts of literacy workshops and literary literacy. Methodologically, this is action research with a qualitative approach, carried out at the Escola Estadual Belem Camara, with 8th grade students of Elementary School. As expected results, the didactic appreciation of the tale belonging to the oral tradition can motivate students and teachers to take a new look at the performance and quality of texts written by students in basic education.
