BIG AREA: Lingüística, Letras e Artes
AREA: Lingüística
SUMMARY:

The linguistic landscapes of urban spaces allow us to observe how different languages,
repertoires, identities, and cultural references circulate and materialize in everyday life.
Based on this understanding, this study aims to analyze the commercial signs that make up
the linguistic landscape of the Alecrim neighborhood in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte (RN),
seeking to understand how superdiversity manifests in these signs and what they reveal
about the social, cultural, and identity dynamics of this commercial area. The research is
situated within the field of Applied Linguistics (Moita Lopes, 2006; Archanjo, 2011, 2016),
adopting a qualitative and interpretative approach. Theoretically, it draws upon studies of
linguistic landscape (Landry & Bourhis, 1997; Blommaert, 2013; Gorter & Cenoz, 2023),
globalization and superdiversity (Blommaert, 2010, 2013; Vertovec, 2007), and
modernity/coloniality/decoloniality (Quijano, 2005; Walsh, 2009; Mignolo, 2017).
Blommaert’s perspective (2005, 2013) further guides the understanding of language as a
social practice and of signs as situated productions shaped by the circulation and
recontextualization of linguistic and semiotic resources. Methodologically, the investigation
aligns with an ethnographic perspective on language, using a corpus of photographs of
commercial signs accompanied by field records and notes. The analysis also engages with
Ginzburg’s (1989) evidential paradigm, focusing on the clues, traces, and details present in
the signs. Thus, the aim is to understand these materialities beyond their commercial
function, observing how they offer clues regarding identities, social values, power relations,
and processes of circulation and re-signification of repertoires between the local and the
global within the Linguistic Landscape of Alecrim.
