SUMMARY:

Auta de Souza has gained prominence in recent times and returned to the scene of literary discussions. In this context, the main objective of this thesis is to present a repositioning of Auta de Souza within the national literary scene, as of the analysis of the circulation of biographical news and poetic texts by the potiguar author in the brazilian press between 1897 and 1930. The study considers the role of patronage systems and self-projection that influenced the consolidation of the author’s presence in national periodicals and in the cultural imaginary, highlighting how marks of romanticism and brazilianness are reflected in her poetry. The theoretical framework underpinning this research articulates different axes of analysis: within the scope of literary history and literary trends, the contributions of Candido (2000), Even-Zohar (1990), Chiappini (1995 and 2013), and Pelinser and Alves (2020) are mobilized; regarding literary comparativism, the study draws on the reflections of Carvalho (2006) and Nitrini (2000); discussions on the periodic and female press in Brazil, and on the dynamics of literary movements produced by women, are supported by Casanova (2002), Duarte (2016), Martins (2008), and Nitrini (2000); in the field of cultural studies, the theories of Bourdieu (2002) and Chartier (2002) are fundamental for understanding symbolic mediations and power relations in the social representations involved in literary practice; the biographical contributions of Figueiredo (2012) and Cascudo (1961) support the analysis of the personal and intellectual trajectories that permeate the investigated corpus. The research conducted on the Hemeroteca Digital platform of the National Library resulted in the cataloging of 280 occurrences of Auta de Souza’s name, of which 94 refer to the publication of poems; the remaining occurrences correspond to articles (62) or references to the poet (118), in addition to advertisements for her book (06) - Horto (1900). The poetry of Auta de Souza that circulated in the national press from 1987 to 1930, beyond its profound lyricism and the historically discussed marks of spirituality, introspection, and the experience of suffering, reveals tensions between resignation and resistance, earthly forces and the sacred; the poet subtly reclaims a place of voice and expression of female subjectivity with the authority of one who recognizes the silencing imposed on poetic words made by women, it is a writing that reflects the values of her time and anticipates a modern gesture of interiorization and aesthetic autonomy, capable of dialoguing with tradition, romanticism, and brazilianness. The most recurring positions by the potiguar poet in the periodicals emphasize pain, the ephemerality of life, death, but also speak of hope, life, faith, and revolution, functioning as a kind of mediation between the human and the divine, transforming the lyric self into an instrument of struggle and the propagation of feminine ideals. In this sense, discussing the breadth of the presence and action of the potiguar poet in the cultural and literary field of the national press implies not only re-signifying her poetic production and demystifying stereotyped perspectives, beyond crystallized readings of the religiosity and sentimentality present in her work, but also affirming the triad of literature, memory, and cultural identity as constitutive axes of collectivity and the importance of the periodic press in the construction of Brazil’s literary history.
