SUMMARY:

This doctoral thesis addresses the theme of multisemiotic, or multimodal, language, widely
spread within the journalistic discourse genre of digital magazine covers, produced during
the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly in the timeframe comprising the years 2020 and 2021.
Bakhtinian Dialogic Discourse Analysis is the theoretical framework underpinning this
entire investigation of language, constituted through the utterances generated in the
pandemic chronotope and manifested by the editorial voice on the magazine covers. This is
based on our understanding that human historicity is the effervescence, beyond intrinsic,
that guides the elaboration of all human discourses, whether verbal or non-verbal. The
discussion under study has the general objective of understanding how multisemiotic
utterances are architected on digital magazine covers, centering on the design of the
statement (projeto de dizer) with a view to the communicative intentionalities of their
elaborators, within the pandemic chronotope. After constant searches via official research
sites for digital magazine publications from various publishers and the Google search tool,
we obtained a cataloging of 22 covers, produced between 2020 and 2021. Six samples of
digital magazine covers were separated: one published by Exame magazine (2020),
followed by Metrópoli magazine (2020), then Superinteressante magazine (2020),
concluding the 2020 timeframe; continuing, the cover of National Geographic magazine

(2021), and finally, 2 samples from Revista Veja, both published in 2021, thus concluding
the corpus of this research. The criteria that guided their selection were based on the
thematic criterion of the Covid-19 Pandemic and the chronological criterion to mark
different temporal moments of the pandemic chronotope. The research has a qualitative and
interpretative methodological approach; it is part of the Applied Linguistics concentration
area in the Discursive Practices research line. Its theoretical reference includes Bakhtin and
his Circle, within the discussions of the design of the statement (projeto de dizer), dialogic-
communicative intentionality, meaning effects, expressive intonation, and informativity.
The data analysis allowed for the understanding that, despite being constructed practically
within the same timeframe of the pandemic chronotope, the digital covers, through their
discursive, verbal, non-verbal, and sound signs, possess analogous discursive clashes,
convergences, approximations, distances, responsivities, dialogisms, and multiple
refractions among their multisemiotic utterances. They further revealed, sometimes veiled,
sometimes explicitly, a global manifestation of meaning that guided the individual
interpretability of each of the six analysis categories, which are: global catastrophe;
aestheticization of daily life; scientific rationality; discursive ambivalence; resigned
realism, and finally, motivating transition. These six distinct categories thus foster the
perception of a manifestation of epistemological intelligibilities within a robust media
discourse genre and provide investigative possibilities in the language areas of
Communication, Design, and Human Language Studies, under the perspective of scientific
research aligned with other theoretical frameworks.
