Reading between the Journalistic Lines:The Image of Slavery in Machado de Assis’s Short Stories
Keywords: Machado de Assis; slavery; Imagology; short stories; newspapers.
One of the most prominent figures to contribute to the literature published in the Brazilian press was Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, and his works have been the subject of extensive study. However, there are still research gaps to be filled, particularly in studies that seek to relate his texts to the periodicals in which they were first published. In this context, the aim of this study is to investigate the image of slavery in the short stories “Virginius: narrativa de um advogado” (1864), “Mariana” (1871), and “O caso da vara” (1891), through the lens of Imagology, taking into account the journalistic platforms in which they were published: Jornal das Famílias and Gazeta de Notícias. To achieve this, the study uses as its guiding framework the concepts of Imagology developed by Pageaux and Machado (1988), Pageaux (2011), and Ribeiro-de-Sousa (2004), along with the works of Chartier (2000), Ferreira (2009), and Sevcenko (2003) on the relationship between literature and history. Additionally, it draws on Malerba (1999), Gorender (2016), and Castro and Alencastro (2008) regarding the history of nineteenth-century Brazil, Chalhoub (2007) and França Neto (2008) on Machado’s writing, and finally Sodré (1966), who analyze the press. Thus, the research adopts a qualitative approach, grounded in bibliographical analysis. It was found that the image of slavery represented by Machado de Assis in these stories reflects both the social and political issues of slaveholding Brazil and the editorial demands and expectations of the periodicals in which they were circulated.
