SUMMARY:

This is a work of dual nature. Its first objective is to cast a glance upon the traces of literary self-representations of Francesco Petrarch in some of his works, especially in the epistle Ad se ipsum, along with other of his letters, both in prose and verse. To this end, besides reading the material written by the poet himself, we rely on the contributions of his biographers. This collection of inputs and sources leads us to closely examine the poet's fixation on the theme of exile, something he carried with him even before his birth. The second objective is to offer an unprecedented translation of the aforementioned epistle into Portuguese, in vernacular hexameters, emulating the rhythm of the original Latin. This translation is accompanied by comments on the translation process, discrepancies among the editions compared to obtain the established original text, and, finally, the intertextualities between Petrarch and the sources he likely drew upon for the composition of the work. Arranged in five sections, this dissertation is grounded in the studies of Jean Delumeau (1994; 1983) and Ronald Gene Witt (2001) to understand Petrarch's place at the dawn of the Renaissance, as well as the biographical contributions of Ernest Hatch Wilkins (1961) and Ugo Dotti (2006) to understand the poet in relation to the world around him. The considerations of Philippe Lejeune (2008), Eva C. Karpinski (2001), and Anna de Pretis (2014), among others, will be essential for the understanding of the epistle (interrelated with poetry) as a valid form of autobiographical expression. The reflections of Julia Kristeva (1994), coupled with the contributions of the biographers, will help us broaden the conception of the foreigner, enabling us to reflect on the modalities of the poet’s self-representation as an outsider. The translation theory and practice of Rudolf Pannwitz (1917 apud Benjamin, 2008) and Carlos Alberto Nunes (1962), respectively, will be necessary for the translation proposal we now present. Through these theories, intertwined with our reflections on Petrarch's biography, we perceive that the figure of the poet harbors a latent, bittersweet sense of not belonging, which finds expression in his writings. Thus, equipped with the translation and comments, we will delve deeper into the intricacies of Petrarch’s soul.
