“ATLANTIS OF THE SERTÃO”: THE CONSTRUCTION OF POINTS OF VIEW IN NEWS REPORTS ABOUT THE CITY OF SÃO RAFAEL/RN
Keywords: Textual Analysis of Discourses. Point of View. News. Enunciative Responsibility. São Rafael.
São Rafael is a city located in the interior of the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), whose history was profoundly marked by the flooding of its former municipal seat between 1983 and 1984 as a result of the construction of the Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves Dam. In this context, newspapers of the time reported on the event, including Diário de Natal. In light of this, this dissertation aims to analyze the construction of points of view (POV) and enunciative responsibility (ER) in news articles published by the newspaper concerning the flooding of the former town. To this end, we established the following general objective: to investigate the construction of points of view and enunciative responsibility in Diário de Natal news articles about the city of São Rafael. The specific objectives are to identify, describe, analyze, and interpret: i) the textual and peritextual zones of Diário de Natal news articles concerning the flooding of the city of São Rafael; ii) the enunciative, textual, and discursive devices that signal point of view and enunciative responsibility in the news articles; iii) the extension mechanisms and modalities of POV; and iv) the effects of meaning produced by the construction of points of view and the assignment of enunciative responsibility in the news articles analyzed. Our theoretical framework is grounded in Textual Analysis of Discourses, as proposed by Adam (2011, 2012, 2017, 2019, 2022), in dialogue with Rodrigues (2017, 2022, 2024), while also establishing an interface with the pragma-enunciative approach to points of view developed by Rabatel (2016, 2021, 2023, 2025a, 2025b, 2025c, 2025d). Methodologically, this is a qualitative, descriptive-interpretive study that combines deductive and inductive methods and is characterized as documentary research. To address news as a discourse genre, we draw on Lage (2006), Charaudeau (2015), and Van Dijk (1988). The corpus consists of nine (9) news articles published by Diário de Natal, the newspaper with the highest number of publications about São Rafael in 1984, the year in which the first news articles concerning the flooding of the former city were recorded. The preliminary results indicate that the primary speaker/enunciator (L1/E1), the newspaper, while seeking to produce an effect of neutrality and lend the text an objectifying character, manifests its subjectivity through processes of referencing and the modalization of the propositional content of its points of view.
