SUMMARY:

This master's thesis conducts a comparative analysis of the novels As Mulheres de Tijucopapo (1982) and Ponciá Vicêncio (2017), investigating how earthen matters—mud and clay—shape the aesthetic craftsmanship of the narratives and organize the dynamics of remembrance and resistance of subaltern characters. Drawing upon Candido’s (2006) premise that the social factor acts as a determining force within the formal economy of literary texts, this study examines the consequences of the geographic and existential deterritorialization imposed on the protagonists during their transit between their native lands and metropolitan peripheries. To this end, the research is anchored in Martins's (2021) formulations on spiral-time and Santos's (2023) notion of circularity, Bhabha's (1998) concept of the in-between space, as well as Glissant's (2005) thought of the trace and right to opacity. The spatial and political dimensions are articulated through Ferdinand's (2022) notions of colonial inhabiting and politics of the hold, Gonzalez's (2020) critique of the socio-racial division of space, and Augé's (1994) analysis of non-places. On a formal and technical level, voice and narrative perspective are investigated based on Genette (1979) and Reis and Lopes (1988); while Felinto crafts a fragmented and enraged autodiegetic narrative rooted in the rupture of linearity and discursive hostility, Evaristo constructs an internally focalized heterodiegetic voice marked by the poetic restraint of escrevivência and the preservation of communal memory. The study concludes that both works dismantle the paradigms of traditional bourgeois realism and transmute earthen substance into a critical agent of reterritorialization, affirming the expressive legitimacy and historical autonomy of subjects fractured by race, class, and gender.
