SUMMARY:

The poetic works of Aurelius Prudentius Clemens, situated between the classical literary heritage and the consolidation of a distinctly Christian poetry, constitute a corpus in which moral, theological, historical, and political issues are intertwined. Within this body of work, the Psychomachia occupies a distinctive position, both because of the originality of its allegorical composition and because of its capacity to bring together and rework themes, images, and concepts found throughout the poet’s other works. In this light, this dissertation proposes a hermeneutic framework for reading the Psychomachia based on the concept of theology of history as applied to Prudentius’ literary production. It proceeds from the premise that the battles between Vices and Virtues should not be understood exclusively as representations of the moral conflict waged within the human soul, but also as poetic configurations of historical, religious, and political processes related to the formation and establishment of Christendom within the Roman Empire. The central corpus of the research consists of the Psychomachia; however, since Prudentius’ works may be read as an interconnected poetic corpus, his other writings are used for comparative analysis and as a basis for the proposed interpretation. Accordingly, the poet’s entire body of work is brought into consideration in order to identify recurring themes, images, theological concepts, and political positions that converge in the allegorical construction of the Psychomachia. The approach adopted is interdisciplinary, combining methods and perspectives from literary criticism, Late Antique history, patristic studies, and theology. It is therefore argued that the Psychomachia, when read in dialogue with Prudentius’ broader poetic corpus, poetically articulates a theology of history in which individual, ecclesial, and political conflicts are reinterpreted in the light of divine providence and the economy of salvation.
