SUMMARY:

The recurrence of anonymous protagonists in Raduan Nassar’s short narratives prompted this research, which focuses on the political dimension of anonymity. Thus, the study aims to analyze the representation of a anonymous characters in seven of the author’s short stories: “O velho” (1958), “Monsenhores” (1958), “Menina a caminho” (1961), “Hoje de madrugada” (1970), “O ventre seco” (1970), “Aí pelas três da tarde” (1972) and “Mãozinhas de seda” (1996), with a focus on how the effects of meaning generated by the representation of these subjects manifest a political potential. This is a qualitative, bibliographical study grounded in literary theory and criticism, as well as historical and sociological research. The theoretical framework regarding character representation draws on Rosenfeld (1981), Candido (1981), and Friedman (2002), while the investigation into the political potential of anonymity relies on DeGloma (2025) and Rancière (2005, 2009, 2012). The analysis reveals a recurring pattern of narrative voices that reduce anonymous figures to generic categories through a process of typification. This formal choice contrasts with the visibility granted to the experiences of the represented subjects; despite being viewed through the lens of anonymity within unequal power dynamics, they exhibit distinct modes of experience that are crucial for reflecting on the contemporary context.
