ABSTRACT

This study is based on the principle that strengthening the relationships between school,
family, and community is essential to promote student engagement, autonomy, and
social transformation. Given the need to connect school practices with local experiences
and the lack of studies in the area of Community Literacy and public policies that
promote dialogue between the school and the territory, this work, developed in the area
of Applied Linguistics (AL), aimed to investigate what contributions a Community
Literacy Project (CLP) can offer to the re-signification of Portuguese language teaching
at the Felizardo Moura State School, starting from the problem-situation of the
precarious state of the institution's sports court. The specific objectives included (i)
understanding how the knowledge and participation of the community strengthen
interaction with the school through social practices of language use; (ii) identifying
literacy events and practices developed in the territory of the Quintas neighborhood, in
Natal-RN, throughout the CLP; (iii) analyzing how the network of activities is
constituted in the CLP “Retratos das Quintas.” Methodologically, the research consists
of a critical action research of a critical ethnographic nature, whose data were analyzed
in a qualitative and interpretative approach. The study takes place at the Felizardo
Moura State School (EEFM), located in the Quintas neighborhood, with approximately
seventy collaborators, including 9th-grade Elementary School students, their respective
guardians, teachers, staff, residents of the Quintas neighborhood, and external
collaborators. The theoretical framework is grounded in Literacy Studies from a
sociocultural perspective. The data analysis was structured around the triangulation of
three analytical categories: local knowledge, deterritorialization of learning spaces, and
network of activities. The results indicate the valorization of local knowledge, with
narratives and memories of the territory integrated into school activities as curricular
content. The language practices produced in the classroom circulated in different spaces
of the school, as well as other locations in the territory, indicating the deterritorialization
of learning spaces. The organization of the CLP "Retratos das Quintas" activity network
contributed to strengthening the links between school, family, and community, valuing
the culture, local knowledge, and school knowledge of the students, whose language
practices took on new meanings and contributed to the re-signification of Portuguese
language teaching in the research context. The use of writing as a social practice in the
CLP resulted in the submission of an official memorandum to the State Department of
Education, the opening of an administrative process, and the participation of students in
the Youth Conference on the Environment at the SEEC/RN, expanding language
practices to institutional spheres beyond the school.
