SUMMARY:

The series Pose, distributed by Fox in Brazil and set in 1980s New York, portrays the lives of various LGBTQIAPN+ individuals, highlighting the reality of Black transgender women and the diverse hardships—whether economic or social—that directly impact the construction of their identities. Consequently, the production seeks to foster debate regarding the inequalities these women face in New York City, addressing both the historical experiences of transgender people during that era and the rights they secured. Among the transgender women featured in the series is Elektra Evangelista, who endures various forms of oppression throughout the episodes, including being the target of transphobic rhetoric. Recognizing the need to raise discussions on this topic within the field of Applied Linguistics, this research aims to analyze the discourses of hate and resistance present in the series and examine how these discourses—directed at Elektra Evangelista—affect her identity within the social spaces she inhabits in the show. From a theoretical-methodological standpoint, the study primarily employs the Bakhtin Circle’s Dialogic Discourse Analysis to examine the discourses of hate and resistance. Additionally, Butler’s (2021) queer studies and Quinalha’s (2022) discussions regarding the LGBTQIAPN+ population provide valuable insights. The research corpus consists of the three seasons of Pose—totaling 26 episodes—from which discourses concerning the character Elektra Evangelista are drawn. The results indicate the presence of hate speech directed at Elektra and shifts in her identity, while also highlighting the need to reflect on the importance of combating gender-based inequalities affecting the LGBTQIAPN+ population, with the aforementioned character serving as the central subject of the study.
