(Re)writings of the katabasis in the epics of Virgil and Sousândrade
katabasis; (re)writing of myths; differential comparison; Sousândrade;
Virgil.
Present in literature for centuries, the myth of katabasis is often associated with the
literature of the ancient Near East and Greco-Roman antiquity. It is possible,
however, to identify eschatological myths in other periods and places, such as 19th-
century Brazilian literature. With this in mind, this study investigated how katabatic
myths were (re)written in Virgil's Georgics and Aeneid (2004, 2019) and in
Sousândrade's O Guesa (2012). To this end, the theoretical framework of Ute
Heidmann (2003, 2010, 2015, 2018, 2024) — discursive, differential, and dialogical
comparison — was employed, along with studies on the myth of katabasis conducted
by Eudoro de Sousa (2013) and Ordep Serra (2002).
