SUMMARY:

This research is based on the principle that strengthening the relationships between school, family, and community is essential to promote engagement, autonomy, and social transformation. In this sense, the research is developed within the context of the Felizardo Moura State School (EEFM), located in the Quintas neighborhood in Natal/RN. The work addresses the community literacy project (CLP) to integrate language practices that value local and school knowledge, promoting a more contextualized and meaningful teaching of Portuguese. Given the need to connect the school with local experiences and the lack of community literacy projects in the Brazilian context, the general objective of the research was to investigate what contributions working with a CLP can offer to the re-signification of Portuguese language teaching at the Felizardo Moura State School. The specific objectives were: (i) to analyze how the knowledge and participation of the community strengthen interaction with the school through social practices of language use; (ii) to identify which literacy events and practices are developed in a CLP; (iii) to observe how the principles of PLC (local knowledge, deterritorialization of learning places, and activity network) emerge and manifest themselves in the organization of the activity network of this research. Methodologically, this action research is qualitative, interpretative, with an ethnographic-critical approach anchored in Applied Linguistics. The study involved approximately sixty collaborators, including 9th-grade students from elementary school II, their guardians, teachers, staff, and residents of the Quintas neighborhood, as well as external collaborators. The theoretical framework is based on literacy studies, especially literacy practices and events, multiliteracies, and community literacy approaches. The analysis was carried out through data triangulation and structured around three analytical axes: local knowledge, deterritorialization of learning places, and activity network. Partial results indicate the valorization of local knowledge, evidenced by the circulation of narratives and memories of the territory in school activities as curricular content, becoming the generating theme of the IV Cultural Exhibition of EEFM. Language practices became part of different spaces within the school, such as the cafeteria, the computer lab, the sports court, and other locations throughout the grounds, indicating the deterritorialization of learning spaces. The organization of the PLC “Retratos das Quintas” (Portraits of Thursdays) activity network contributed to strengthening the bonds between the school, family, and community, valuing culture, local knowledge, and school knowledge through language practices that redefined the teaching of Portuguese at the Felizardo Moura State School.
