SUMMARY:

This dissertation examines the representation of lesbian identities in 21st-century Brazilian literature through a comparative analysis of Controle (2019) by Natalia Borges Polesso and Corpo Desfeito (2022) by Jarid Arraes. Addressing the historical marginalization of lesbian experiences in Brazilian literary production, this study seeks to reposition lesbianities as a vital aesthetic, political, and historical category. Drawing on Adrienne Rich’s (1980 [2010]) critique of compulsory heterosexuality and her concept of the lesbian continuum, alongside feminist scholarship on marginalization, resistance, and collective memory, the research underscores the subversive potential of sexual dissidence. The study is structured in two parts: the first develops a critical and conceptual framework, defining lesbian literature in the Brazilian context, mapping its presence in contemporary fiction, and reviewing existing scholarship; the second analyzes the selected novels, focusing on character development, narrative structures, representations of violence, and the emancipatory power of love and desire. Employing Bakhtinian discourse analysis, the research connects literary texts to their socio-historical contexts, revealing how Polesso and Arraes’s narratives challenge heteronormative frameworks. The dissertation argues that lesbian literature, as an aesthetic practice, not only enriches representations of lesbian identities in Brazilian fiction but also fosters new pathways for collective memory, political resistance, and dissident futures.
