SUMMARY:

This research investigates the constructions of melancholy in the literary works of Raduan Nassar (1935-). Initially, we address the author and his literary production, raising questions that guide the development of the research, with a detailed explanation of the narratives. Subsequently, the relationships between the theoretical framework of our category of analysis—melancholy— in some literary works are established to verify the central hypothesis of this study. This hypothesis, in turn, is based on the possibility that the works comprising the research corpus — Ancient Tillage (2016a), A cup of rage (1992), and “Menina a caminho” (2016b)—share the aesthetic treatment of melancholy as a common thread, thereby providing a productive path for expanding understandings of these texts. To better explore the social and structural elements incorporated into Nassar's work, we primarily draw on Bakhtin (2017; 2023; 2019) to adopt a literary analysis aimed at dialogically converging content, material, and form, presenting verifiable interpretations. Regarding the narrative genres that constitute the corpus, we primarily consult Bakhtin (2015a; 2015b; 2019) on the novel; Evrard (1997) on the novella; and Cortázar (2008) on the short story. Concerning melancholy and its relationship with literature, notable contributions include those of Lima (2016), Freud (2013), Kehl (2009), Scliar (2003), Lages (2007), Starobinski (2016), and others. From the study's findings, it was observed that the author employs distinct sides of melancholy in the works examined, most fruitfully exploring those generated by issues and/or traumas stemming from family relationships. Whether through the intense involvement of family members in protagonists' lives or the absence of such relationships, it is certain that from these experiences, characters, narrators, settings, and narratives are constructed within a melancholic aura that aids in comprehending and deepening interpretations of Raduan Nassar's fictional work. It is thus concluded that his literary production also turns into a sign of melancholy as a means of addressing human multiplicities, idiosyncrasies and complexities.
