SUMMARY:

Mario Vargas Llosa is part of a select group of writers who became known for the boom in Latin American literature, a literary movement that occurred between the 1960s and 1970s, which led to authors like him gaining worldwide prominence, driven by stylistic experimentation and an interest in portraying the complex social and political realities of Latin America. His book La Guerra del Fin del Mundo, published in 1981, is considered one of the writer's most important works, a work in which Vargas Llosa establishes a dialogue between literature and history, based on the reading of the book Os Sertoes, by Euclides da Cunha, whose main theme is the Canudos War (1896-1897). With his concern for portraying the social problems of Latin American societies, it is clear that the author was also interested in portraying the condition of women, and the multiple forms of violence they suffer throughout the narrative as they inhabit a universe marked by male domination. In this context, this qualitative and bibliographical research aims to analyze the construction of female characters in relation to the violence they suffer in La Guerra del Fin del Mundo, in an attempt to confirm whether sexual violation against women is a pattern in the construction of the female characters in the novel. For this purpose, we shall analyze the voice that drives the entire plot, and is responsible for presenting the female characters in the work - the narrator. The aim is to analyze the choices he makes regarding the vocabulary used to describe scenes of sexual violence, to establish the interaction between the characters and their description. In this sense, a comparison will also be made with other works by the author, observing whether the style of each influences the representation of sexual violence against women and, therefore, the construction of the dynamics of submission and resistance. In the works in which humor predominates, it is clear that sexual violence against female characters is portrayed in a naturalized manner, even being enveloped in a certain eroticism. In works of historical content, with more documentary aspects, the author chooses to manifest a trail of social denunciation in the narratives. With this analysis, we arrive at the notion that the author tries to imprint in his work the sense of the presence of an evil (Bataille, 2022; Eagleton, 2022) that has its origins and ramifications in society. We also identify the unfolding of this evil in the form of the domination and sexual violence against female characters (Chaui, 2017; Franco, 1984; Perrot, 2005). Therefore, we seek to bring this portrait of the female condition in the work of Mario Vargas Llosa, considering whether there is a creation of stereotypes, and if the role of these characters reflects or criticizes society.
