SUMMARY:

The choices made by language users in linguistic production tasks can provide evidence about
how discursive processing occurs. Considering that, this work aims to build a corpus of verbs
with Implicit Consequentiality tendencies in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) based on the question
of how this phenomenon can impact linguistic production. Implicit Consequentiality can be
defined as a semantic content contained in certain verbs that allows the speaker to
unconsciously infer the consequence of the event represented by the verb (Crinean, Garnham,
2006; Garnham, Vorthmann and Kaplanova, 2020). This consequence inferred by the speaker
can be focused to either the subject (Nominal Phrase 1) or the object (Nominal Phrase 2)
depending on the Implicit Consequentiality verb that structures the sentence. Based on this,
we carried out two experiments with the aim of building a corpus of interpersonal verbs of
Implicit Consequentiality in BP. The first experiment is the emotional valence evaluation that
provides emotional valence metrics for the verbs used in the second experiment. The second
experiment is the continuation of sentences in which the phenomenon of Consequentiality is
properly investigated. In the sentence continuation experiment, we sought to verify whether
Implicit Consequentiality tendencies manifest in BP. Furthermore, we also identify to what
degree to which factors such as semantic role, gender and emotional valence affect linguistic
production in consequential contexts. To develop our experimental hypotheses, we based on
the work of Garnham, Vorthmann and Kaplanova (2020), which focuses on the phenomenon
in the English language, and for the categorization of the semantic roles of interpersonal
verbs, we followed the proposal of Ruldoph (1997). Our results confirm the Consequentiality
tendencies of the verbs for both Nominal Phrase 1 and Nominal Phrase 2. Concerning
semantic roles, our results indicate that they interact significantly in the choice of the
consequential referent. About gender, the results reveal that there is an effect of the gender of
the subject of the sentences on the choice of the referent taken as a consequence of the event
portrayed by the verb, however, the gender of the research participant did not demonstrate
significant effects. Finally, with regard to emotional valence, we did not find significant
effects when verifying the interaction of emotional valence with the other factors selected for
this work. The scripts for the analyzes executed are available at the following link:
