SUMMARY:

The history of class society reveals that women’s civil, political, and social rights have never been fully guaranteed; a single crisis is enough for gains to be questioned (Beauvoir, 2016), exposing the fragility of women’s place as subjects of rights. In the political sphere, the establishment of women’s suffrage in 1932 did not constitute a point of arrival, for those who dare to occupy positions of power face gender-based political violence, a practice that seeks to undermine the exercise of their rights (Ferreira, Rodrigues & Cunha, 2021). Recent reports, such as that of Sabbatini et al. (2023), show that this violence drives women away from the political sphere and harms their mandates, reinforcing the perception of their presence as “abnormal,” the result of centuries of patriarchal exclusion. This reality is sustained by the sexual division of labor, the control of women’s bodies, and the denial of rights—elements that structure capitalist-patriarchal society (Osterne & Silveira, 2012; Saffioti, 2004). Even in pioneering states such as Rio Grande do Norte, underrepresentation persists, highlighting the need to qualitatively understand women’s participation. In the Municipal Council of Natal, the right to maternity leave for women was only established in 2015, making it a relevant setting for analyzing women’s presence and the expressions of gender-based political violence. The general aim of the research is to analyze the forms of expression of gender-based political violence against city councilwomen in Natal-RN and its articulation with the structures of patriarchal capitalism, understanding it as a mechanism for reproducing conservative hegemony and limiting women’s full political participation. Specifically, the study seeks to characterize the women who have occupied the Council, identify forms of gender-based political violence, and analyze how these are inscribed in institutional norms and practices, linking them to the state’s historical and territorial dynamics. Methodologically, the study adopts Historical-Dialectical Materialism, grounded in Marxian theory and political-Marxist feminism. The methodological design includes historical mapping, document analysis, an ethnographic diary, and interviews with councilwomen. The research aims to produce a form of resistance, contributing to confronting gender-based political violence, offering theoretical tools for its characterization, and expanding understanding, within the field of Psychology, of the suffering and subjectivities of the women who experience it.
