SUMMARY:

The research aims to understand the work process and the perceptions of health teams regarding the care provided to persons deprived of liberty who perform labor activities, in order to support the development of a health booklet. The study, based on a qualitative approach, was guided by participatory action research and carried out with health professionals who are part of prison health teams working in prisons in Greater Natal and the Metropolitan Region, including physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, dentists, and nursing technicians. Data collection took place through operative groups aimed at discussing needs, collectively developing, and validating the health booklet. The data were analyzed using Bardin’s content analysis technique. The analysis process of the collected statements resulted in the construction of four final categories: (1) Work process of health teams in the prison system: planning, practices, challenges, and implications for care; (2) Challenges in the work process of health teams in the prison system: between structural limitations, healthcare demands, and security issues; (3) Prison labor, health, and motivation: a protective factor in the context of deprivation of liberty; and (4) The health booklet in the prison context: mediation of care and support for health follow-up and workers’ health surveillance of persons deprived of liberty.
