SUMMARY:

Breastfeeding is globally recognized as a fundamental practice for promoting child and maternal health and is considered one of the most effective strategies for reducing child morbidity and mortality from preventable causes. An up-to-date approach grounded in best health practices, delivered by professionals in Primary Health Care (APS), is essential. In this context, the objective is to evaluate the management of human breastfeeding with an emphasis on the Brazilian APS. This research combines two methodological designs: a scoping review (Study 01) and a methodological study involving the development and validation of an instrument to assess knowledge on breastfeeding evaluation and management among higher-education professionals working in APS: AMAH-APS (Study 02). The scoping review follows the methodological recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). In March 2024, searches were conducted in the PubMed, Lilacs, Cochrane and Embase databases. Studies addressing instruments for assessing the breastfeeding process during the postpartum period were included, regardless of publication year or language. Study selection and data extraction are being conducted in pairs, and disagreements are being resolved by a third reviewer using the Rayyan platform (https://www.rayyan.ai/). Data extraction and synthesis will be performed using a semi-structured instrument based on the model provided in the JBI manual. A total of 23,965 articles were identified; after duplicate removal, 18,037 remained. To date, 850 articles have been pre-selected, and 991 present conflicts to be
resolved by a third reviewer. Subsequently, the studies will undergo full-text screening to determine inclusion in the review. The methodological study, with a quantitative approach and national scope, is being conducted in three stages: 1) Content validity assessment of the questionnaire developed in the study. The sample for this stage consisted of a panel of nine PhD-level experts with a minimum of five years of experience in the field. 2) Pre-testing, currently underway, with a sample of three to ten higher-education health professionals from each category—nurses, physicians, and dentists—working in APS teams. 3) Questionnaire administration with a sample of 384 higher-education professionals involved in breastfeeding management in APS. It is expected that, through the validation and application of the questionnaire, it will be possible to understand the overall landscape of the work performed by higher-education professionals in Brazil’s basic APS teams regarding the process of evaluating and managing human breastfeeding.
