INTRODUCTION: Road running, which often begins in the early morning hours, imposes logistical challenges that may require changes in training schedules and adjustments in athletes’ sleep patterns to ensure adequate recovery. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of changes in training schedule on sleep patterns, stress tolerance, and mood state in amateur runners. METHODS: Thirty-two runners of both sexes (19 women and 13 men; age: 35 ± 6.09 years; body mass: 66.43 ± 10.23 kg; height: 166.44 ± 7.86 cm) completed two non-consecutive training weeks at different times of day (morning: 5:00–6:00 a.m.; evening: 7:00–8:00 p.m.), separated by a washout period. Participants were divided into runners who habitually trained in the morning (21) and those who habitually trained in the evening (11). After an initial assessment including anthropometric characterization, body composition (DXA), sleep questionnaires (PSQI), and chronotype assessment (MEQ), participants followed individualized and equivalent training protocols across both weeks. During each experimental week, sleep (accelerometry and sleep diary), daytime sleepiness (ESS), mood state (BRUMS), and stress tolerance (DALDA) were monitored, allowing within-subject comparisons between training schedules. RESULTS: or the analysis of sleep onset times, circular statistics were used to avoid errors arising from the cyclical nature of time (24-hour scale). After adjustments using a linear mixed-effects model, training time was found to significantly influence sleep onset, although this effect depended on each athlete’s habitual training schedule. Athletes who normally trained in the morning and switched to evening training showed a delay in bedtime of 18.9 min (95% CI: 1.97 to 36.5), shifting from 10:34 p.m. to 10:53 p.m. Conversely, athletes who normally trained in the evening and switched to morning training showed an advance in bedtime of 34.1 min (95% CI: 10.5 to 57.4), shifting from 11:06 p.m. to 10:32 p.m. Regarding wake-up time, a trend toward phase delay and phase advance associated with evening training was observed in both groups, although without robust statistical evidence. No statistically significant differences were observed between training conditions for any sleep variables. Stress tolerance indicators increased throughout the week, with no significant effect of training condition. Regarding mood, evening training was associated with higher levels of confusion, tension, and depression, whereas vigor, fatigue, and anger did not differ between conditions. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that changes in training schedule are dependent on athletes’ habitual routines and primarily affect bedtime and mood responses, while overall sleep parameters and stress tolerance appear to remain stable regardless of training condition.
