SUMMARY:

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a Game-Based Approach (GBA) in developing the tactical behavior of students practicing table tennis in a school context, and to analyze student perceptions after 15 lessons using this approach. A mixed-methods research approach was adopted, combining quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative sample consisted of 10 students, while the qualitative stage involved 14 students in semi-structured interviews to capture their perceptions. The pedagogical intervention comprised a 15-lesson table tennis program adapted based on GBA principles and the materials from the Segundo Tempo program, focusing on tactical problem-solving. Tactical performance was assessed using the Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI) in pre- and post-intervention moments, allowing for the objective measurement of the Decision-Making Index (DMI) during the game. The quantitative results indicated an improvement in the students' Decision-Making Index (DMI) after the implementation of the GBA, although this improvement lacked statistical significance. These findings nonetheless demonstrate the effective development of tactical intelligence and problem-solving skills in table tennis. Complementarily, the qualitative analysis of the interviews corroborated the intervention's success, pointing to a noticeable increase in tactical understanding, motivation, and active involvement among the students. Student perceptions highlighted that the GBA made the learning process more meaningful, fun, and directly connected to real game situations, promoting reflection and autonomy. It is concluded that the Game-Based Approach is an effective and promising pedagogical alternative for teaching table tennis in the school environment. Its application favors the students' integral development, stimulating autonomy, reflection, and contextualized, tactical learning of the sport.
