SUMMARY:

This study proposes an experimental investigation into the impact of short-term professional training programs grounded in two distinct theoretical frameworks: Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and the hedonic principles of motivation and affective experience, on participants’ motivation, adherence, and attendance rates in fitness centers. Despite the continuous global growth of the fitness industry, dropout rates remain high, ranging from 40% to 65% within the first six months, highlighting the urgent need for innovative strategies to enhance engagement in supervised exercise programs. SDT posits that the satisfaction of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) fosters the development of intrinsic and autonomous motivation, whereas the hedonic perspective emphasizes the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of displeasure as automatic regulators of behavior. Integrating these two approaches may provide a more comprehensive theoretical and practical framework for promoting exercise adherence, deepening the understanding of how affective and cognitive dimensions interact in sustaining physical activity participation. The methodological design will consist of a randomized, pragmatic, single-blind clinical trial with three parallel groups (Control, SDT-based, and Hedonic-based) allocated in a 1:1:1 ratio. The intervention will involve a three-hour professional training session, followed by quarterly reinforcement sessions and continuous monitoring of institutional attendance over a 12-month period. The total projected sample is 174 participants (58 per group), with an additional subsample designated for physical and behavioral assessments. The primary outcome will be participants’ attendance and dropout rates, while secondary outcomes will include motivational, affective, behavioral, and physical variables such as basic psychological need satisfaction, motivational regulation, exercise enjoyment, body composition, flexibility, and muscular strength. Statistical analyses will employ a 3x4 repeated-measures ANOVA (groups × time), focusing on longitudinal interactions and main effects on attendance. The central hypothesis is that both training programs, particularly the SDT-based one, will promote higher engagement and lower dropout rates compared to the control group, with additional positive effects on behavioral and affective dimensions. The expected results may significantly contribute to the advancement of behavioral and exercise sciences
