Urbanization modifies the biophysical properties of the Earth's surface, altering the surface energy balance and promoting the formation of Urban Heat Islands (UHIs). In semi-arid regions, such as the municipality of João Câmara, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, this process may intensify urban warming and alter local microclimatic conditions, particularly as a result of land use and land cover changes. In this context, this study aims to analyze the relationship between land use and land cover changes and the formation of Urban Heat Islands in João Câmara, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, as well as their effects on the local microclimate. The methodology is based on the integration of remote sensing, geoprocessing, and microclimatic monitoring techniques. Preliminary results reveal significant land use and land cover changes over the past four decades, characterized by urban expansion, reduction of native vegetation, and an increase in anthropogenic surfaces. Microclimatic analyses indicate consistent differences between urban and rural environments, with higher air temperatures, lower relative humidity, and higher vapor pressure deficit values in urbanized areas. Furthermore, the intensity of the Urban Heat Island exhibited variations throughout the diurnal cycle, indicating differences in the magnitude of warming between the environments analyzed.
