SUMMARY:
Antarctic sea ice is considered a fundamental element in the analysis of global climate, due to its performance as a thermal insulation, reducing the heat exchanges between the ocean and the atmosphere. In addition, the distribution of sea ice is of paramount importance in the formation of transient atmospheric systems, such as extratropical cyclones, especially those originating from the continental border of Antarctica. Extratropical cyclones are study targets due to the impact on the weather condition of the regions they pass through, and efficiency in the transport of heat, water vapor and momentum. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the behavior of the extratropical cyclones of the Southern Hemisphere (HS) in relation to the Antarctic sea ice for the period 1901 to 2016, by means of two simulations in the SPEEDY General Circulation Model of the Atmosphere, in one of the simulations will remove the Antarctic sea ice and in the other there will be no removal of the Antarctic sea ice, in a regular grid of 3.75 ° x 3.75 ° and temporal resolution of 24 hours. The data used for the climatic analysis of HS atmospheric circulation will be the fields of geopotential height at atmospheric levels of 850 and 500 hPa, air temperature, zonal and southern wind, and specific and relative humidity, both at surface and at atmospheric levels of 850 and 500 hPa, mean sea level pressure (PNMM), convective and large-scale precipitation, and sea surface temperature (SST). For the analysis and detection of the extratropical cyclones in the HS will be used PNMM, geopotential height, zonal and southern wind at atmospheric levels of 850 and 200 hPa, and zonal and southern wind-stress. This study is expected to provide information on the influence of Antarctic sea ice on HS extratropical cyclones, as well as on the behavior of variability modes and other impacts on global climate, allowing for subsidies for other climate simulations and related studies.
