SUMMARY:

As a fundamental component of intensive and specialized care, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is an environment dedicated to performing interventions and treatments essential for the care of hospitalized neonates. Clinical practice in this context requires the execution of invasive procedures, among which the use of central venous catheters stands out. The Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) is often the first choice for medium- to long- term treatment. PICC insertion is an advanced, complex procedure, and its management requires technical skills and clinical reasoning on the part of the nurse. The objective of this study was to verify the clinical applicability of the Terminology Subset of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP ® ) for newborns with a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter, using Betty Neuman's Systems Model as the theoretical framework. This is a prospective study evaluating the clinical validation of 31 diagnostic/outcome statements and 154 nursing intervention statements. The study was operationalized through the following steps: implementation of the Nursing Process in a medium-sized hospital in Northeast Brazil; development of case studies; and analysis of agreement among specialist nurses. Kappa concordance coefficient, Kruskal- Wallis test, and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) were used. The sample consisted of 40 neonates hospitalized in the NICU using a PICC. The study adhered to regulatory guidelines for research involving human subjects and was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, with approval number 7.171.001. The diagnostic/outcome and intervention statements were evaluated with near-perfect/perfect agreement and excellent ICC. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed no significant difference among the evaluations. It is concluded that the results of this study confirm that the ICNP® terminology subset developed for neonates with PICC is valid for use in clinical practice, expanding the possibilities for the development of clinical reasoning and providing a data set that supports evidence-based nursing practice. This research becomes relevant for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, especially from the following perspectives: Health and Well-Being, by promoting safe and evidence-based care practices in neonatal care; Quality Education, by strengthening the technical and scientific training of nursing professionals; and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, by validating an innovative clinical tool that contributes to improving health systems. Thus, care for neonates using a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter based on the proposed subset has become applicable to clinical practice.
