Incorrect attachment of the infant to the breast can trigger health complications
for the mother, including pain, cracks and nipple trauma, and for the infant, as it
can cause early weaning and unbalanced nutrition. The construction of this
nursing diagnosis will allow greater precision in identifying and solving problems
in breastfeeding. Thus, the objective of this study is to develop and validate the
proposition of the nursing diagnosis of incorrect attachment of the infant to the
breast. This is a methodological study, which will be developed in three stages:
theoretical-causal validation, content validation and clinical validation. The first
stage will be based on the development of a Middle-Range Theory, following the
theoretical framework of Lopes and Silva (2016), namely: definition of the
approach for theory construction, definition of key concepts, construction of a
pictorial diagram, formulation of propositions, establishment of causal
relationships and evidence for practice; and Kristen Swanson's Theory of Care
(1991). The second stage involves content validation, which will allow us to
assess the degree of agreement of expert judges on the components that
characterize the presence of a nursing diagnosis. Finally, clinical validity will be
achieved through a diagnostic accuracy study. Data analysis will consist of the
accuracy of clinical indicators and diagnostic inference, through latent class
analysis (LCA) and testing of associations between related factors and the
diagnosis under study, according to the calculation of posterior probabilities.
