Occupational stress has affected health professionals and caused several physical and
psychological complications to their health. Therefore, recognizing the risk factors for
the development of stress overload in these professionals will facilitate the development
of actions by nurses aimed at its prevention. However, the diagnosis Risk for
occupational stress overload has never been created in the NANDA International
taxonomy. Thus, the development of this diagnosis will allow the clinical practice of
nurses, especially in the area of occupational health, to occur in a systematic and
evidence-based manner. In this sense, the general objective of this study will be to
develop the proposition of the nursing diagnosis Risk for occupational stress overload
and validate it clinically in health professionals based on a Middle-Range Theory. To
this end, this will be a methodological study, which will be carried out in three stages,
namely: theoretical-causal validity, content validity and clinical validity. In the first
stage, the conceptual validation of the diagnostic proposition developed from a
middle-range theory will be carried out in light of the framework of Betty Neuman
(2011) and Lopes, Silva and Herdman (2015), namely: definition of the approach for
theory construction, definition of key concepts, construction of a pictorial diagram,
formulation of propositions, establishment of causal relationships and evidence for
practice. The second stage will encompass content validity, which will allow assessing
the level of agreement of judges regarding the elements that constitute the presence of
the nursing diagnosis and finally, the third stage that will consist of the clinical validity
of the nursing diagnosis developed, which will be carried out in a University Hospital in
the city of Natal/RN, with a sample of 302 health professionals proportional between
nursing, doctors and other categories in the health area. For data analysis, descriptive
and inferential statistics will be used. The project was submitted to the Ethics
Committee of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital (HUOL) of the Federal University
of Rio Grande do Norte and approved under Opinion: 6.978.737 e CAAE
81481224.0.0000.5292. It is expected that the study will contribute to the advancement
of knowledge in nursing science through the development of a nursing diagnosis based
on a Middle-Range Theory, as well as to the nurse's performance being guided by more
scientific and qualified care for the health of the worker.
