SUMMARY:

Intestinal stomas allow the externalization of portions of the intestine on the abdominal
wall and are routinely performed in healthcare services. These surgeries have a significant
impact on aspects of self-care. As a way to support the self-care of this population, mobile
technologies emerge as resources that enable easy access in various locations, quick
information retrieval, and communication. However, there is a lack of studies on the
development and evaluation of the impact of such software on the health of people with
stomas. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the mobile application
Ostocuide® in the self-care of individuals with intestinal stomas. This was a quantitative,
methodological, interventional, and longitudinal study conducted from March 2023 to
January 2025. The study had two main phases: a methodological study for content
validation and usability assessment and an interventional study in the form of a
randomized clinical trial. The methodological phase was conducted from March to
December 2023 and involved content validation with 10 expert judges via the Google
Forms platform, as well as usability validation and assessment with 10 individuals with
stomas at the State Center for Rehabilitation and Specialized Outpatient Care. The
intervention phase was carried out at the State Center for Rehabilitation with individuals
with stomas from July 2024 to January 2025. A simple random sampling approach was
used to allocate patients into two groups: a control group, which received only
conventional guidance during nursing consultations, and an intervention group, which, in

addition to consultations, used the Ostocuide® application. Both groups completed a self-
care development questionnaire and were monitored for 45 days, with reassessments

conducted at 15, 30, and 45 days via telephone contact. The results of the methodological
phase showed that, in the first round of evaluation by the judges, all domains presented a
content validity index of 1.00, except for font size, which obtained 0.90. Consensus was
reached in the second round. In the patient evaluation, the number of illustrations received
a score of 0.80 in the first round, with consensus reached in the second round. The overall
usability score averaged 92.25 points. In the intervention study phase, the sample
consisted of 61 individuals, with 30 in the intervention group and 31 in the control group.
In the primary outcome, only the knowledge domain showed a statistically significant
interaction effect, demonstrating an interaction between knowledge and groups (F=7.33,
p=0.00). The intervention group’s average scores were higher over time compared to the
control group. The differences between the groups were statistically significant across all
domains and in the overall average. There was a moderate and significant correlation
(r=0.449; p=0.013) between the number of accesses to the application and the final self-

care assessment score. All participants reported being satisfied with the application, and
only three individuals indicated that it was not easily accessible. Regarding the app’s
contributions, 11 participants (36.7%) highlighted information related to nutrition, 6
(20.0%) mentioned hygiene and bag replacement, and 4 (13.3%) cited laws and rights.
Therefore, it was observed that Ostocuide® is effective in promoting self-care and may
contribute to improving the quality of life of individuals with stomas. This study
contributes to the advancement of knowledge regarding technologies for people with
stomas, though further studies are needed to assess the application's effects in different
contexts.
