AREA: Enfermagem
SUMMARY:

Introduction: Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is defined by the touch of the baby's body on
the mother's chest, both naked. This practice is recommended by the World Health
Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which advise
placing the baby in skin-to-skin contact with its mother immediately after birth, for at
least one hour. Skin-to-skin contact in the first hour after birth is essential for the baby's

adaptation to the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life. It is observed that there
is controversy among obstetric and neonatal teams regarding adherence, correct execution
and benefits of this contact for mothers and newborns. Given all these conflicts, this
systematic review and meta-analysis aims to gather scientific evidence and understand
the effects of immediate skin-to-skin contact between mother and newborn. Method: This
is a systematic review and meta-analysis that will be structured according to the items of
the Preferred Reports for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA).

The PICOT strategy will be used, the inclusion criteria will be randomized or quasi-
randomized clinical trials on the topic, the search, collection and analysis of data will be

carried out by two reviewers and a third reviewer will mediate disagreements. Protocol

registration: PROSPERO - CRD42024561462. Expected result: It is known that skin-
to-skin contact after birth can be immediate or early. It has consequences for the mother

and the newborn in the physiological, social and psychological spheres. That is why it is
such an important practice to be implemented and better investigated. It is expected that
studies that gather scientific evidence about this practice can help in the implementation
of this care in the daily life of habitual and high-risk maternity hospitals.
