SUMMARY:

This study examines the debate surrounding the category of social movements in the professional training process within stricto sensu graduate programs in social work in the Northeast region of Brazil, starting in the 1990s. This period coincides with the consolidation of the Curricular Guidelines and the deepening of the neoliberal agenda and productive restructuring in Brazil, material conditions that directly affect the morphology of social movements and the possibilities of their critical incorporation by academia. The guiding question of this investigation is: how is the debate on the category of social movements configured in the professional training process within stricto sensu graduate programs in social work in the Northeast region of Brazil?

The general objective is to analyze how this debate is configured in the graduate programs of the Northeast since the 1990s. This objective unfolds into four specific objectives: to map the graduate programs in the region affiliated with ABEPSS (Brazilian Association of Social Work Education and Research); to identify how the category of social movements appears in the institutional documents of these programs, pedagogical projects, syllabi, and curricular matrices; to identify the predominant trends in this debate throughout the period; This research aims to analyze the contradictions present in this debate and its relationship to the social direction of the ethical-political project of the profession.

The investigation starts from a central premise: although the debate on social movements is present in the institutional documents of the Graduate Programs in the Northeast of Brazil, its configuration reveals contradictions between the discursive affirmation of its centrality to the ethical-political project of the profession and its effective incorporation as an object of critical reflection in training. This premise unfolds into two others: that this debate presents oscillations and discontinuities between the 1990s and the present, following the conjunctural transformations of social work and Brazil; and that the identified contradictions express a distancing between the founding critical tradition of the profession and contemporary trends of depoliticization and academic institutionalization of the theme.
