EXPANDING MARMOSET SOCIAL DYNAMICS: INSIGHTS FROM POPULATION TO INTRAGROUP LEVELS
Callitrichidae, Social Network Analysis; Dispersal; Vocal Communication
This study aims to expand and explore aspects of the social dynamics of wild common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), using population-level and group-level approaches. Chapter 1 introduces the core themes of sociality and social dynamics, discussing the particularities in cooperative breeding animals, and presents marmosets as a study model. Chapter 2 investigates which social and ecological variables promote demographic changes, specifically emigration events, in different populations and environments. In Chapter 3, we investigate group-level social dynamics through social network analysis, exploring the impact of demographic changes (entry and exit of individuals and loss of dominant individuals) on groups' interaction networks and explore the social integration process of migrant individuals. Finally, in Chapter 4, we explore an aspect still understudied in the natural environment that plays a role in the social integration process: vocal accommodation (convergence). To this end, we compare the acoustic parameters of vocalizations before and after changes in group composition.
