SUMMARY:
This thesis aims to verify the place that the body occupies in political philosophies of recognition, situated as reflections on the struggles for rights to identity, rights to difference, and rights to freedom. Thus, it seeks to analyze how the body, as a social category, constitutes a fundamental theoretical and philosophical element in multiple political philosophies of recognition, notably in the works of contemporary philosophers Charles Taylor, Jürgen Habermas, Axel Honneth, Judith Butler, and Nancy Fraser. We argue that, although in some cases it is not directly addressed by the authors, the problem of the body/corporeality is implicit and implied in the reflections of these philosophers. The research is divided into two parts: in the first part, comprising chapters one and two, we investigated the philosophical and epistemic origins and foundations of the concept of Recognition, from Fichte, through Hegel, to its reception in the theoretical work of Charles Taylor, Jürgen Habermas, Axel Honneth, Judith Butler, and Nancy Fraser. In the second part, covering chapters three and four, we will explore how the category of body/corporeality was epistemologically constituted from the perspective of philosophy, social sciences, and history in the context of Western culture, and how this category entered into social common sense, up to its significance in the current struggles for recognition. Finally, at the heart of the thesis, the research will point out how and why the body appears explicitly in Judith Butler and Nancy Fraser's Theory of Recognition, and implicitly and almost forgotten in the analyses of Recognition by Charles Taylor, Jürgen Habermas, and Axel Honneth.
