City Notebooks:
Relationships and disputes between cultural agents in Cidade Alta - Natal/RN
urban anthropology; cultural agent; Natal; life; urban transformations.
This research seeks to understand and analyze cultural production in the downtown area of the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. This street ethnography describes the relationships, practices, and knowledge of cultural agents (artists and producers) who promote various events and demonstrations in the city center. Conducted between 2023, 2024, and 2025, the research sought to map and describe these agents and their relationships with each other and with political actors (city hall, Department of Culture, local politicians) in order to understand their strategies and articulations for securing support for their events and productions. This allows the Upper City to host a range of activities, thus countering this discourse of "death" by presenting an Upper City that is powerful and "alive" as a place of art, culture, and leisure. To this end, the methodological approach adopted tools from urban anthropology, visual anthropology, and sound anthropology.
