SUMMARY:

Science education plays a fundamental role in raising awareness about soil health and sustainability, a topic of significant relevance in contemporary society. Soils perform vital functions in ecological processes, biodiversity conservation, and the maintenance of environmental balance. However, despite their importance, this subject is still addressed superficially in school curricula. In light of this gap, this study aims to analyze the impacts of the Inquiry-Based Teaching approach on teaching soil health and sustainability in a public elementary school in Northeastern Brazil, seeking to promote students’ understanding of the importance of soil health for sustaining life on the planet. The research was conducted in a public elementary school located in Northeastern Brazil, with the purpose of deepening students’ understanding of soil functions, its essential role in ecosystem sustainability, and fostering their interest in soil conservation and appreciation. Methodologically, this study is characterized as qualitative, with an exploratory and applied nature, grounded in the principles of action research. Data analysis was carried out using the Technique of Elaboration and Analysis of Units of Meaning (Moreira; Simões; Porto, 2005), which is based on elements of content analysis proposed by Bardin (1977), enabling a detailed and contextualized interpretation of the findings. The results showed that, even though students initially presented fragmented conceptions, they gradually expanded their ability to identify factors that either compromise or promote soil health, relating them to environmental, social, and economic contexts.
