SUMMARY:

Mathematics is often considered a difficult and abstract subject in basic education, frequently reduced in the classroom to its formal and formulaic aspects, dissociated from the students' context. In this sense, the present research aimed to investigate the potential and limitations of a mathematics teaching proposal starting from the students' contexts, in order to promote mathematical literacy from a contextualized, critical, and transformative perspective. The ideas of reading the world and reading the word were articulated with some ideas of mathematical literacy from a critical and liberating perspective and underpin our proposal. In this way, we developed an educational product that began with a thematic investigation within the participating school community, resulting in a generating theme worked on throughout the activities: the lack of water. Based on this central theme, we organized an educational product composed of four units structured according to the Three Pedagogical Moments methodology. We began with an initial problematization of water, subsequently organizing the knowledge through a comic strip format, thus introducing the concepts of units of measurement related to basic sanitation and water rationing. Finally, we applied the discussed knowledge to develop a collective proposal to address the problem of water waste at school. Our educational product was applied to a 6th-grade class in a regular elementary school in the municipality of Serra Caiada-RN, in the form of a sequence of four mathematics classes. The collected data were analyzed using discursive textual analysis, unitizing the information into units of meaning, categorized into three dimensions of reading, and finally communicating through metatexts resulting from the analysis. From these results, we were able to identify the dimensions of reading mobilized by the participating students, thus promoting reflections and actions on the announced limit situations. We therefore believe that this educational product, structured around a thematic investigation and three pedagogical moments, sought not only to address lived curricular content but also to develop awareness of the implications of water scarcity, fostering a critical stance towards the limiting situations encountered in the contexts experienced by the students and promoting learning beyond the walls of the school.
